CURBED Picks Broadway as 1 of 10 Street that Define America
The curious thing about Broadway, Sacramento’s most storied street, is that it’s cleaved in half by a 10-lane interstate, California Route 99.
To the west, it reaches to the Sacramento River, passing one of the oldest cemeteries on the West Coast and running through the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods. To the east, it stretches just shy of the Sacramento State campus, passing through Oak Park, a neighborhood with deep ties to Sacramento’s culture.
Sacramento top-ranked for first time since 1960s

When you’re the coach of the latest top-ranked football team back home, not even bumper-to-bumper traffic on a Sunday afternoon in the Los Angeles area can dampen the mood.
And Justin Reber wasn’t the only person smiling at Sacramento High School during Monday afternoon’s practice in Oak Park. The Dragons were a bit giddy, too, knowing they are top-ranked by The Bee, a spot ahead of Folsom – which Sac High knocked from the perch last month.
Dragons go for 96% or more

The Class of 2016 left its mark at Sac High in many areas, including setting a record of having 95% of seniors earning acceptance to a four-year college. Now, the Class of 2017 has a tall task in aiming to exceed the record set by its predecessor.

And on Friday, the coach was restless again, but this time for all the joyous, right reasons.
Basking under the glow of a glistening full Harvest Moon and reaping the benefits of skill and athleticism, and sheer energy and will, the Dragons staged an epic performance at Folsom, bouncing the top-ranked Bulldogs 32-27 in a nonleague contest sure to reverberate the rest of the season.
Sacramento Asian Chamber moves into larger building in Oak Park
As part of an ongoing expansion, the Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce has moved from midtown to a larger building in Oak Park that it may someday share with Sacramento’s other ethnic chambers of commerce.
Another Sellout Expected for the Annual St. HOPE Dinner
Planning is already well underway for the annual St. HOPE Dinner taking place on Friday, October 28 at the Red Lion Woodlake hotel. This year’s fundraiser “Generation HOPE” will honor St. HOPE Families who have been dedicated to St. HOPE for many years, and focus on the next St. HOPE generation.
Girls Volleyball Team Reunites with Dragon Legend

On August 29, 2016 the Sac High Girls Volleyball team traveled to Placerville, CA, to take on the El Dorado High School Cougars in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Volleyball Foundation Game. Since 2002, the one day competition serves the section as a fundraiser for the annual A. Dale Lackey Student-Athlete Scholarship and the Women in Sports Conference. Aside from the monetary gains, this year’s encounter re-united the Dragon Family with former Sac High Athletic Director, and Sac High founding teacher, Justin Gatling.
Sac High Seniors Carry the Torch

The Torch, more commonly known as The Student Store, quietly took on a new look and feel last spring before making a huge bang this back to school season. It was just last year Sac High seniors felt compelled to make a difference in their school and leave a legacy that would last.
3400 Building Renovation

Fresh carpet. Painted walls. New tenants. The office located on the corner of 34th Street and 3rd Avenue, previously home to Teach for America and College Track, is looking different these days. Recent renovations included new carpets, coats of fresh paint and making room to host large trainings. Another education focused nonprofit, City Year Sacramento, has moved in and will use the 3400 building to house its full time staff as well as host professional development sessions for up to 80 people. Tina Nguyen, City Year’s Operations Manager, says the updates make the space feel homey and she is excited to be completely moved in.
School’s Back!

On August 10th, nearly 1,700 PreK-12th grade students returned to school for the 2016-17 school year across the campuses of St. HOPE Public Schools. While Triumph preschool had already been open for a week, PS7 (TK-8), Oak Park Prep (7-8) and Sac High (9-12) all opened their doors the second Wednesday in August to kick off the new year. Now, one month into school, classes are full and students are taking their first steps of the year climbing the mountain to and through college. In fact, despite being just one month into their senior year, this week Sac High 12th graders will receive their first ever college acceptances at Sacramento’s annual HBCU Fair.
Indivizible Meets Tedx

On August 15, the Indivizible Speaker Series held its 2nd annual version of TEDx at the Guild Theater. The sold-out crowd of 200 people was entertained by a variety of speakers, videos and performers during the 90 minute event.
The theme for the event was “40 Acres and a Muse” and the program consisted of local entrepreneurs and entertainers. Place maker Tre Borden, and Rapid Brands CEO Chris Johnson, who appeared on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” headlined the program.

More Time for All

St. HOPE is founded on five pillars. Pillar number three is More Time. Most know this translates into longer school days for our students, which is one part of the concept of more time, and one that may cause kids to cringe initially. But it makes sense. If you are behind it will take longer to catch up. If you are ahead then more time will help you get further ahead. However, the pillars are not just for our students, they apply to the adults as well.

Dragons Receive NFL Honors

After capturing the 2015 Metro League Championship banner, Sac High Football continues to roll. With the start of the fall season approaching, the Dragons are gearing up for a tough pre-season schedule with aims of repeating and exceeding the expectations set during last year’s impressive campaign. This season, the Dragons will compete against Jesuit High School, J. Serra Catholic High School from Los Angeles, and the prolific Folsom High School Bulldogs, all before Metro League competition.
Black Book Fair Has a Home in Oak Park

The third annual Sacramento Black Book Fair kicked off at the Guild Theater on June 3rd and continued through the weekend at several Oak Park locations, including underground books. underground books store Manager, Mother Rose, and a team of organizers tirelessly plan the 3-day event each year, which continues to grow in size and notoriety.
The celebration, which is free and open to the public, includes panel discussions, book signings, writer discussions, cultural food vendors and art displays.
