Area’s best girls basketball teams, Sac High and McClatchy, need each other

RyAnne Walters hobbled a bit, her limbs tender to the touch.
The sophomore guard for the Sacramento High School girls basketball team was awash in pride Wednesday night after the No. 2 Dragons held off top-ranked McClatchy 54-48, but her gait was more deliberate than a full giddy gallop.
When these rivals meet anything goes, including a pileup of bodies chasing a loose ball that leaves fans to wonder if there will be sounds of crumpled metal and shattered glass.
St. HOPE Scholar Spotlight

My name is Akosua Boateng and I am a 17 year old senior who attends Sacramento Charter High School. I have been part of the St. HOPE family since I started my 4th grade year at PS7 elementary and I’m looking forward to walking the stage this spring with my diploma and heading off to college next year. I can proudly say that college has been drilled in my head since I was in elementary school. I have applied to all the colleges I am interested in attending, so the plan is to attend one of the many UCs here in the state or go to a private school.
Dragons Float On
Capitol Floats, a floatation therapy center located in the heart of Oak Park, opened its doors in February of 2016. Owner Ryan Duey and team have been extremely supportive of St. HOPE by sponsoring and attending our Edible Sac High Dinner and partnering with senior advisory classes to give students an opportunity to explore floating.
Kicking Off 2017 as a Family
After a restful holiday break, SHPS staff reunited before the return of students for a mid-year half day session of the St. HOPE Leadership Institute (SHLI) program. The purpose of SHLI is to align staff on the history, culture, and norms of St. HOPE, empower individuals to become leaders through public service and the development of effective solutions to urban challenges, and to strengthen the St. HOPE community across the entire organization.
200 Wins
During winter break Sac High varsity girls basketball coach Michele Massari accomplished two incredible feats. First, her Lady Dragons Basketball team captured the title at the nation’s most prestigious high school girls basketball tournament, the Nike Tournament of Champions, held annually in Arizona. Along the way to the championship coach Massari also secured her 200th win as Sac High’s head coach.
No federal money for Oak Park, but promises remain

Oak Park will not receive a multimillion-dollar federal grant that former Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson in April billed as a potential game-changer for the neighborhood, but some of the social, educational and health care organizations that joined together to compete for the money will continue efforts to help children in the impoverished area.
Historic Gateway Arch Returns to Oak Park in a Nod to Sacramento’s Past
Oak Park has brought back a piece of its past to help reinvent its future.
A new gateway arch has been installed at the entrance to the neighborhood’s McClatchy Park on Fifth Avenue, near the former site of a streetcar terminus that once served a thriving business district.
The arch is nearly identical to a sign that stood at the park’s entrance in the early 1900s, a time when Oak Park was the city’s first suburb.
Meet Karen Henderson, Director of Edible Sac High
Edible Sac High is excited to welcome new Director, Karen Henderson to the St. HOPE Family. Karen, a successful businesswoman and star of Cupcake Wars, started off with a bang in her first week teaching cooking club scholars to bake red velvet cupcakes. The lesson was a hit and it’s safe to say that everyone is excited about what’s in store for 2017.
Five More Years of HOPE
This past Thursday, December 8th, the Sacramento City Unified School District board of trustees voted 6-1 to renew the charters for PS7 and Sac High for five more years, through June 30th, 2022. This is a big win for St. HOPE and for the students and families we serve as it permits our schools to continue to deliver a high-quality, public, free college prep option for students and families. The St. HOPE team would like to give a big thank you to all the students, families and staff who attended the hearing (on Nov. 17th) and/or the vote this past Thursday.
Holiday Hoops
It’s that classic time of year again! December is home to the St. HOPE Classic basketball tournament. Officially known at the St. HOPE Elite Hoops Classic, this year’s tournament will feature 32 of the top teams from the area, Southern California and from as far away as Utah, Wisconsin and Texas. This year’s tournament runs from December 26-30 and games will be played at Sac High, Hiram Johnson and Capital Christian. See here for more information.
Lady Dragons
The Lady Dragons Basketball team will be competing at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Arizona during a five day period from December 18th through the 22nd. The TOC is considered one of the most prestigious high school basketball events in the country. Since 1997 it has hosted more than 20,000 athletes from across the country, including Canada. The event serves as a platform showcasing top pedigree competition, many of whom continue their careers in college and at the professional level. This will be the ninth year of participation for the Lady Dragons.
Glimmers of HOPE at the Turkey Day Giveaway
On Monday, November 21st, the St. HOPE Family gathered together for a morning of service at the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services where the team aided in a successful turkey distribution that provided over 4,000 turkeys to needy families in the Oak Park and Sacramento community.
Sac High Celebrates Fall Sports
As Sac High Athletics enters the winter sports season, we want to celebrate some fall accolades. Football finished the Metro League competition with a perfect record. The #1 ranked, back-to-back champions, most recently dismantled Stagg High School of Stockton in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship. The Dragons will host Inderkum High School on November 20, 2016; kick-off is slated for 1:00 pm. The winner of the second round playoff game will advance and potentially face Jesuit High School the day after Thanksgiving.
(Civil Rights) History in Oak Park
Indivizible’s October program was a timely commemoration of local history and civic engagement. Highlighting a grassroots movement that has made game-changing impacts on American culture and society, the 50th Anniversary of the Black Panther Party generated a crowd of members and devotees alike that packed the historic Guild Theater to capacity. Mayor Kevin Johnson commenced this three-course tribute with a dedication ceremony adjacent to the 40 Acres building in Oak Park. Mayor Johnson officially designated the Victorian-era home at 3418 3rd Avenue as the Huey P.
Educator of the Year
Announced at the St. HOPE Dinner, this year’s Educator of the Year award goes to Mikki Berthiaume of PS7 Middle School! Mikki, or Ms. B as her kids call her, truly goes above and beyond for our scholars and embodies St. HOPE’s five pillars.
CURBED Picks Broadway as 1 of 10 Street that Define America
The curious thing about Broadway, Sacramento’s most storied street, is that it’s cleaved in half by a 10-lane interstate, California Route 99.
To the west, it reaches to the Sacramento River, passing one of the oldest cemeteries on the West Coast and running through the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods. To the east, it stretches just shy of the Sacramento State campus, passing through Oak Park, a neighborhood with deep ties to Sacramento’s culture.
Sacramento top-ranked for first time since 1960s

When you’re the coach of the latest top-ranked football team back home, not even bumper-to-bumper traffic on a Sunday afternoon in the Los Angeles area can dampen the mood.
And Justin Reber wasn’t the only person smiling at Sacramento High School during Monday afternoon’s practice in Oak Park. The Dragons were a bit giddy, too, knowing they are top-ranked by The Bee, a spot ahead of Folsom – which Sac High knocked from the perch last month.
Dragons go for 96% or more

The Class of 2016 left its mark at Sac High in many areas, including setting a record of having 95% of seniors earning acceptance to a four-year college. Now, the Class of 2017 has a tall task in aiming to exceed the record set by its predecessor.

The Seeds of HOPE Dinner is a one-of-a-kind event that brings together students, all-star chefs, and community partners. The Annual Dinner supports the Edible Sac High Garden, which provides scholars with the necessary skills, tools, and confidence to make intelligent choices about the food they choose to fuel their bodies, while simultaneously providing opportunities to develop real-world business skills and acumen.
