Sac High Alumni Spotlight: Shon Tyler, DDS, Class of 2008
Pipeline April 2025
Shon Tyler, DDS attended Sac High from 2004 to 2008, a pivotal time in the school’s history. His freshman year corresponded with St. HOPE’s transformation of Sac High into a charter school along with the opening of PS7, which now serves TK-8th grade scholars. The changes brought by St. HOPE were immediately noticeable, and Shon recalls how much the faculty cared about the students and their success. The new vision and initiatives resonated with both students and staff, creating a sense of purpose on campus. Sac High’s rich history, strong sports programs, and vibrant alumni community enriched Shon’s experience.
After graduating from Sac High, Shon pursued higher education with the support of a St. HOPE scholarship, which helped offset the cost of attending Arizona State University. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media Studies. However, his career path took a turn after he had a pivotal conversation with his father, who pointed out Shon’s talents for working with his hands and connecting with people. His Dad suggested that Shon would be well-suited for a career in healthcare and this advice inspired him to pursue dentistry, a field where he could blend technical skill with aesthetic precision.
Shon completed his post-bachelor studies at Portland State University and then went on to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Howard University. After graduating in May 2023, he completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco.
Shon credits Sac High with preparing him for college and his career by exposing him to a diverse and inclusive environment. The school’s supportive faculty and student body gave him the confidence to venture out of state and pursue his dreams. His involvement in sports—basketball, football, track, and cross-country—taught him valuable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and adaptability, which he continues to apply in his professional life.
Shon’s advice to current and future students is to take advantage of Sac High’s resources, opportunities, and smaller classes. Also, he encourages St. HOPE scholars to leave their comfort zone and explore opportunities out of their hometown.
Now back in Sacramento, Shon is eager to give back to the community that shaped him. He looks forward to getting more involved with St. HOPE and other local initiatives while also making time for golf and his family and friends.
