The Legacy of Literacy: Celebrating Mother Rose
President's Message - 04.29.25

Post

This month, we celebrate the birthday of Mother Rose (April 7), a beloved figure whose vision and resilience helped shape Underground Books into the cultural cornerstone it is today. Mother Rose believed in the power of literacy to transform lives. Her mission was never just about selling books, but about creating access—especially for those whose stories have often been overlooked. She filled the shelves of Underground Books with works by Black authors, historical voices, and emerging thinkers, cultivating a space where conversation and connection could thrive.

In honor of her birthday, we’re continuing her legacy through the “Mother Rose Angel Tree” which provides culturally relevant books for students in grades K-8 for children in Oak Park. You can support The Mother Rose Angel Tree by purchasing a book that will be given to children during literacy events throughout the year.

Mother Rose taught us that a single book can spark change—and thanks to her, we’re still turning pages, opening minds, and building community. You can see a list of Mother Rose’s favorite books on the Underground Books website. Because we value all of our donors, we are making an effort to streamline our donations, and therefore will not be participating in the Big Day of Giving this year, so please consider making a donation and help us celebrate Mother Rose’s life by spreading the gift of reading.

In community,
