National Association Black Bookstores Launches

Post

We are thrilled to announce that the National Association of Black Bookstores (NAB2) has officially launched, becoming the first national organization dedicated to supporting Black-owned bookstores. NAB2 was founded by Mayor Kevin Johnson in honor of his mom, Mother Rose, who founded Underground Books in 2003 and passed away in December 2024.

NAB2 is a membership-based organization dedicated to promoting literacy, amplifying Black voices, and preserving Black culture. The organization’s board is composed of both veteran owners of long-established bookstores and newer booksellers who have opened their stores more recently. The focus areas of NAB2 include:

  • Elevate and advance the Black bookstore community by providing professional resources, visibility and a community of fellowship;

  • Increase the number of Black Americans in the bookstore / bookselling industry, by supporting their long-term financial sustainability;

  • Leverage economies of scale to benefit existing and future Black bookstores and booksellers;

  • Serve as a voice for Black bookstores and booksellers and advocate on their behalf; and

  • Cultivate understanding and education about the history and legacy of Black bookstores in the United States.

You can become a member and read more about the launch of NAB2 in the Literary Hub.
