Best Selling Author Closes Indivizible Speaker Series

The Indivizible Speaker Series, hosted by Underground Books and St. HOPE, held its last official gathering on December 8 with well-known author Terry McMillan.  The sold-out crowd of 200 people was entertained with a personal reading by Ms. McMillan from excerpts from her newest release, “I Almost Forgot About You”.  As part of the program, Mayor Johnson also engaged in a more personal Q&A with Ms. McMillan before allowing the audience to ask questions of their own.

Following the event, the audience flooded Underground Books to purchase McMillan’s new book and lined up for autographs and pictures with the special guest.

Founded by Mayor Kevin Johnson on February 7, 2011, with just seven community leaders in Sacramento, Indivizible grew to become an organization with more than 1,000 members.  For more than five years, Indivizible has held monthly meetings with an agenda focused on education, economic empowerment and politics specific to the African American community in Sacramento.  Each meeting welcomed a special guest that included such speakers as Sinbad, Dr. Synthia Saint James, Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King III, Isaiah Thomas, Dr. Ben Carson, Ambassador Andrew Young, Tavis Smiley, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and many more.

During the final event, Mayor Johnson was recognized by various local organizations for his efforts in making a difference in the African Community. More significantly, these organization also announced they would make a financial contribution to ensure the legacy of Indivizible continues beyond Mayor Johnson’s tenure.
