Increasing Access and Opportunities for St. HOPE Public Schools Scholars
We were thrilled to partner with St. HOPE Public Schools to help coordinate a weeklong trip for Sac High seniors to visit several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). On the trip scholars visited Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, Morris Brown College, Alabama State University, and Tuskegee University and had a great time at Tuskegee’s annual Homecoming celebration and football game. They also explored museums, enjoyed southern food, and walked across the Selma Bridge – a moving experience for so many students.
Jha’ naya Kennedy, a Sac High senior shared, “the HBCU tour was such a good experience it made college feel real for me. Being on those campuses and meeting students who looked like me and were doing big things got me excited for my own future. The trip definitely got me more excited for college because it helped me picture myself on campus and realize that going to an HBCU could be the perfect fit for me.”
We also work to connect SHPS scholars with community service activities and are excited that our scholars and families participated in the annual Thanksgiving food distribution that took place this past Saturday, November 22 at the South Sacramento Christian Center. We were thrilled to support those in need and help make sure they had enough Thanksgiving food for their holiday celebration.
